African Baby Names
For the best selection of African baby names, here are some suggestions on available books, online resources for these names and their meanings.
Browsing baby names from online services is perhaps the most convenient way. And many, as I do, like to print out names for comparison and further analysis. However, printing out thousands of names on paper is not fun and the sheets of paper get messed up very easily.
That’s why the names in book format have held their popularity. Also, these books offer far more depth in terms of analyzing the origins and meanings of the names.
And because books are compact, they’re easy to carry around and get opinions from your friends and family, if you like.
There are also CD-ROMs about baby names, but many of these offer much of the same information that can be found online for free.
African Baby Names – Books
The major book retailers online, such as Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble, have some books on the subject of baby names with an African origin.
For many of these books, Amazon lets browse through some introductory pages and the index, which should provide info on the books suitability.
Amazon has also a new book search, which lets you find matches from inside the book for keyword that you search for, such as “African baby names”.
The books that are available include:
- 1,001 African Names: First and Last Names from the African Continent
by Julie Stewart
- African Names
by Sharon Bernhardt, Samaki, Credo Vusa'mazulu Mutwa
- Proud Heritage : 11,001 Names for Your African-American Baby
by Elza Dinwiddie-Boyd
- The African-American Baby Name Book
by Teresa Norman
African Baby Names – Online Resources
Many of the online resources that offer baby names make their lists from user suggestions. Although this method will expand the number of names on the list, the quality of names may suffer. This can happen as girl names get mixed up into boy names category and vice versa, for example.
Therefore, it’s best to confirm the name from several sources, and the more official sources you can get, the better.
To start your research, you can take a look at the lists of African names at Baby Guide:
- African Baby Name Meanings (for around 250 names from Nigerian, Somali, Ghanese, Malawian, South African, Botswanan, Zulu, Kenyan, Tanzanian, Urdu, Ugandan, and Swahili)
Another, one of the biggest sources of names (with over 700,000 names in total) is the kabalarians.com web site. The names have been compiled mainly from requests and submissions by the sites users. They have not attempted to certify the national or ethnic origin of the names listed.
