Baby Name Surveys

Baby name surveys are great for feedback if you've created a unique baby name or just want to know if a familiar name sounds right with your last name.

If you're unsure whether the name for your baby is a popular one, you don't have to go to survey sites to find out the popularity.

Social Security Administration's database of baby names, at ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/ lists the top 1,000 most popular names for as far back as the year 1990.

If you want to know the popularity of the name, just type it in to the field for "Name?" at the Popularity of the Name search.

For example, a search for the name "Christopher" reveals that the name's popularity peaked at number 2. (for the years 1990-1995), and was the 9th most popular name in the year 2003.

You can also get suggestions for similar names. For Christopher, those names include Chris (371th most popular name in 2003), Christian (24th), Cristian (139th), Cristobal (946th), Cristofer (956th), Cristopher (547th), and Kristopher (348th).

Available Baby Name Surveys

The available surveys on baby names are typically arranged on baby name forums. These forums have threads for surveys on different baby names.

Before you start a new thread, search the database of past discussions, to see if your baby name has alread been discussed in the past.

Forums that you can post your name on for a survey and feedback includes babynamesworld.com/forum/ (see the forums for baby girl and baby boy name reviews).

There are also bulletin boards for baby names. For UK based discussion on english language baby names, see, for example, babycentre.co.uk/bbs/536622/.

Finally, you may want to check out different online groups for baby name surveys and discussion.

These groups are available at groups.aol.com and groups.yahoo.com, for example.

The last time I checked, there were 29 different groups for a search on "baby names" (without the quotes) on AOL and 116 groups for the same search on Yahoo!
