Baby Names
Deciding upon the most suitable baby names is one of the most important events early on in the baby’s life, and the decision will affect the rest of the baby’s life.
There are countless things that can affect the name decision. However, there are some helpful resources that can help you choose the best name for your child.
In fact, Internet has opened the doors to a massive amount of FREE information on names and their meanings.
In addition to the Internet, you can find books about names, software programs, and consultants who can offer advice on choosing the name based on your preferences.
Baby Names Resources – Internet
Internet is a wonderful resource for anyone thinking of choosing baby names. In addition to getting FREE access to a huge amount of names from around the world, you can also find name meanings and celebrity baby names, just to name a few examples.
One of the first stops for many parents thinking of names is the Social Security Organizations database of names. This is a wonderful resource with access to raw data on most popular names starting from the early 1900’s. If you’d like to check out this
resource for baby names, see here (opens up a new window).
For name meanings, one of the most favored resources online is the BabyCenter name search engine. This engine allows you to search for a meaning using a name, or find a name using a meaning.

In addition to finding names and meanings, you can also participate in online chats and online forums about names. In fact, this way you can get fast feedback on your chosen name for the baby by organizing a forum poll or asking about feedback on chat rooms.
Baby Names Resources – Consultants
Using consultants to aid in the process of choosing from the thousands of names might take some of the pressure away from parents. The way these usually work is by giving a list of suggestions based on preferences of the parents and suitability with the surname.
If you decide to work with name consultants, you should opt for consultants that offer a comprehensive analysis of the reasons why their list of suggestions would suit the baby well. An example of firm offering consulting services is Moss Gathering Partnership, which functions online, offering service on a global basis.
There are also software programs that offer a suggested name list based on preferences. These programs work very much like consulting services, however, without the personal touch.
As an example, one such program is available from DF Creations. The program lets you search names (25,000+ names) based on preferences: gender, origin of the name, how the name starts/ends, theme of the name, or meaning/definition of the name. In addition, you can choose preference on the number of syllables on the name.
Baby Names Resources – Books
In addition to online resources and personal help (consultants), you can also refer to the many books available on the subject of names. Here is an exemplary list of books that you might want to take a look at.
