Decorating Baby Nurseries

Decorating baby nurseries is fun and if you're short on ideas, many manufacturers have ready-made nursery themes that you can use. However, its best to start planning the nursery with a short-list of needed items and work from there to more details.

Most aim for the nursery to have the maximum safety for the baby, with soothing colors and designs to make it as comfortable environment as possible. To this end, furniture and accessory manufacturers have un-official lists of essential nursery items, including such items as:

  • baby monitors
  • cradles
  • changing tables
  • changing table pads
  • cribs
  • crib bedding sets
  • crib toys
  • diaper pails
  • dressers
  • gliders
  • mattresses
  • mattress pads
  • sleep soothers
  • night-lights
  • nursing stools
  • playmats
  • rugs
  • sheet savers
  • toy chests
  • window valances

As for the final decoration, you also have to think about wall décor, possibly with wallpapers, wall borders, and banners.

Decorating Baby Nurseries - Themes

The easiest way to approach decorating the nursery is to stick with a theme. There are many ready-made themes, plus you can easily make your own themes based on colors and shapes of furniture and other decoration.

Ready-made themes found on most bigger baby stores include:

  • Winnie the Pooh
  • Sea & sky
  • Flowers
  • Noah's ark
  • Teddy bears
  • Animals and insects

In addition to themes, you should think about the gender of your baby. Different colors and themes set different moods, some more suitable for a baby boy than for a baby girl and vice versa. In choosing furniture and themes, it doesn't hurt to think ahead to the times when the baby will be more knowledgeable of the surroundings.

Decorating Baby Nurseries - Safety

Safety of the baby can be enhanced when decorating baby nurseries. Baby monitors with more than one receiver keep you up-to-the-second on whether the baby is feeling well or is crying. There are also other safety enhancing products, including night lights and baby gates that you can use creatively for maximum safety in the nursery.

One popular category of safety products are instructional videos and DVDs that instruct some of the benchmark safety decorations in the nursery and elsewhere in home.
