UK Baby Names

UK's National Statistics released their data on the most popular UK baby names for 2004 on January 5th, 2005.

In comparison to earlier years, there were some significant changes on the list.

For baby girls names, Emily held the top spot for the second year in a row.

Chloe had been the no.1 girl name for many years until 2003, and is now the fifth most popular choice for parents with a baby girl, behind Ellie, Jessica and Sophie.

According to National Statistics, the hottest new name on the top 50 list of baby girl names in the UK is Evie, up 22 places to 39. Other notable new entries include Madison and Niamh.

For UK baby names for boys, Jack has been the no.1 choice for parents with baby boys for 10 years in a row.

The other boys names in the top 5 are Joshua, Thomas, James and Daniel.

This situation has been unchanged since 2002 and reflects the consistency with which parents select boys' names.

In fact, this tendency by parents to pick more unusual baby girl names than boys names has been proven by scientific research.

Trends in UK Baby Names

As is the case with other parts of the world, movie star baby names and movie star names themselves have an impact on naming trends in the UK.

One of Britain’s leading actresses, Keira Knightley, may have been partly responsible for the increase in the popularity for baby girl name Keira, up 100 places to 51 in 2004.

Another rising movie star, Sienna Miller, might have had an impact on UK baby names, as the the popularity of her first name soared, but remained, only just however, outside the top 100.

Also, Tony Blair's decision to name his baby boy Leo may have been one of the reasons why Leo was up 22 places to 57th place among UK baby boy names in 2004.
