Unique Baby Girl Names

Popular ways to find unique baby girl names is to use foreign versions of popular U.S. names, place names as first names, and creating a totally new name.

Very few names are actually unique, one-of-a-kind names. A handy tool to check out how many other parents have named their baby with the same "unique" name is located at the official website for Social Security Administration.

The website, at ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/, allows you to search for the 1,000 most popular names each year (as far back as 1990) in the U.S.

The 1000th most popular boy name on the SSA list for 2003, Zayne, was used by parents 157 times, and the 1000th most popular girl name, Katy, was used by parents 230 times in 2003.

Unique Baby Names - Foreign Spellings

The English language and English names are mostly based on Latin language tradition.

Many other languages, including French, Italian, and Spanish, are also based on Latin, making the names used on those languages very similar to English names.

Thus, some parents have found a nice way to a unique first-name / last-name combination by using first names from latin-based languages other than English.

You may even consider using an original latin name for your baby girl. For example, Alitia is the Latin form of Alice (Alice is actually used by many as the spoken form of Alitia), and is not found in the top 1,000 most popular girl names list.

Unique Baby Girl Names - Place Names

Place names are sometimes used to make unique combinations with last names. The place name can have specific associations with it.

For example, Victoria and David Beckham named their baby boy Brooklyn, as that was (reportedly) the place where their son was originally conceived.

Paris Hilton, the daughter of Rick and Kathy Hilton, of the Hilton Hotel empire, is another example of a person with a place name as a first name.

Hilton group has a world-famous hotel right next to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, but it's uncertain that this is the connection to the Paris Hilton's first name.

Unique Baby Girl Names - Creating Names

Increasingly popular way to come up with a unique name is to create a uniquely new one.

The main ways in which new abstract baby names are created include:

  • scrambling letters in the original names
  • scrambling vowels in the original names
  • scrambling consonants in the original names
  • combining names
  • spelling the names differently
  • adding prefixes to the original names
  • adding suffixes to the original names

When you create abstract, unique baby girl names, you lose much on the substance that goes with many first names, as there won't be any specific meaning associated with the name (other than it's unique).
